Jean Shrimpton (born 7 November 1942 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire) is an English Supermodel and actress. Nicknamed 'The Shrimp', she was an icon of Swinging Sixties London, possessing some of the gamine features that also made a huge success of the younger Twiggy. She starred alongside Paul Jones in the 1967 movie Privilege. The fashion trendsetter was also a heartbreaker to many glamorous men she knew during her time as a world famous cover girl (including a stint as the face of Yardley of London). She was once engaged to 60s photographer David Bailey, on whom the David Hemmings character in the movie Blowup was based. They met on a shoot for a Cornflakes advertisement. BAILEY: I can tell you this: size doesn't count. It got better, too. There were a few in between, by the way. I remember Catherine saw some pictures of Penelope Tree by Avedon in American Vogue, and she said, "You're gonna run off with this woman." Which was odd because I didn't even know who Penelope Tree was.

But you did run off with Tree. And wasn't she 17 years old?

BAILEY: Well, I was only 30—or something like that. Yes, Penelope was 17, but mentally she was 35. I mean, Penelope was very grown up—really sophisticated.

Was she a similar kind of phenomenon as Twiggy?
BAILEY: Penelope was more than Twiggy. Twiggy was like the Monkees, the Beatles. Penelope kind of started all that "Flower Power." And she wore the shortest miniskirts I've ever seen.

Wasn't she aristocratic?

BAILEY: Yes, and she was a real rebel. But I didn't do such great pictures of Penelope. Somehow I couldn't. Avedon did great pictures of Penelope—really great pictures. But I guess Penelope's still my best friend, along with my wife and a couple of guys. I see her at least once a month.

How did you meet her?

BAILEY: Vogue called me up and said, "We're photographing this very aristocratic girl called Penelope Tree, and we don't want any of your nonsense." What a stupid thing to say. It was like a red rag to a bull. If they hadn't said anything, I might not have noticed. But because they said it I thought, "My God, now I'm really interested."

Was she as bright as they say?

BAILEY: Bright, bright, bright, bright. I think the first conversation we had was about T.S. Eliot. And it didn't stop for eight years.

What was it about her look that made her right for that time? Why did she hit the way she did?

BAILEY: In a way, Penelope was New York's revenge on London. It was sort of, "We can shock too." Vreeland discovered her at Truman Capote's Black-and-White ball. Actually, I think Guy Bourdin was the first one to take pictures of Penelope, then Avedon. And it went from there.

How happy were her parents to see you coming?

BAILEY: Her mother hated me. But her mother was a horrible woman. Marietta Tree, my God, what a bitch! She was a complete phony, a fake, a snob,... the worst!

Do you think that made you more attractive to Penelope?

BAILEY: I think she liked it that I didn't like her mother, in a funny sort of way, because I remember when I went to collect Penelope, her mother opened the door and said, "She's not going to London with you." And I said, "Oh, all right." Then I said, "You know, it could be worse; it could be a Rolling Stone." And she laughed. So we sort of had a standoff. Anyway, Penelope and I flew off to London, leaving tear-stained Marietta Tree on the doorstep of her mansion.

Edith Minturn "Edie" Sedgwick (April 20, 1943 – November 16, 1971)^] was an American actress, socialite, and heiress who starred in several of Andy Warhol's short films in the 1960s.

Poor Little Rich Girl is their first film.
But some people said, Warhol ruined Edie's life. So they were split.

Sedgwick often combined the medications with alcohol. On the night of November 15, 1971, Sedgwick went to a fashion show at the Santa Barbara Museum, a segment of which was filmed for the television show An American Family. After the fashion show, she attended a party and was supposedly attacked by a drunken guest who called her a heroin addict. Sedgwick phoned Post, who arrived at the party and, seeing that she was disturbed by the accusations, took her back to their apartment around one in the morning. On the way home, Sedgwick expressed thoughts about the uncertainty of their marriage. Before they both fell asleep, Post gave Edie the medication that had been prescribed for her. According to Post, Sedgwick started to fall asleep very quickly, and her breathing was, "bad – it sounded like there was a big hole in her lungs," but he attributed that to Edie's heavy smoking habit and went to sleep. When Post awoke the following morning, Edie was dead. The coroner ruled Sedgwick's death as "undetermined/accident/suicide"

Watermelon Bombe : good for your summer

Ingredients

Serves 12

2 pints pistachio ice cream
1 pint Vanilla Ice Cream
1 quart Watermelon Sorbet
4 Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers, broken into 1/4-inch pieces
1 six-inch-round layer Vanilla Sponge Cake

Directions

Line a 3-quart metal mixing bowl with plastic wrap, and leave the edges overhanging. Place lined bowl in freezer for 10 minutes; this will be the mold. Chill the bowl of an electric mixer as well.
Place pistachio ice cream in the chilled mixer bowl. Using the paddle attachment of the mixer, beat on low speed until ice cream is spreadable, about 30 seconds. Remove chilled mold from freezer. Using a rubber spatula, coat inside of mold with all the pistachio ice cream, making a 1/2-inch-thick layer. Return mold and clean mixer bowl to the freezer for 30 minutes.
Place vanilla ice cream in chilled mixer bowl. Beat on low speed until spreadable, about 30 seconds. Remove mold from freezer. Using the rubber spatula, coat pistachio layer with the vanilla ice cream, making a 1/4-inch-thick layer. Return mold and clean mixer bowl to freezer for 30 minutes.
Place sorbet in chilled mixer bowl. Beat on low speed until sorbet has softened, about 1 minute. Fold in wafer pieces. Remove mold from freezer. Pack sorbet into center, making an even layer that comes to 1/3 inch below the top of the ice cream layer. Cover sorbet portion with sponge cake; trim cake if necessary. Return mold to freezer until completely hardened.
To serve, place a serving plate upside down on top of the mold. Holding plate against mold, invert both. Place a hot wet kitchen towel over the mold. Remove the metal bowl. Immediately before serving, remove the plastic wrap.
